Project progress tracking is the process of monitoring the status of a project and documenting its progress. It helps project managers and sponsors identify risks, assess whether the project is on track, and decide how to address issues.

The PMI (Project Management Insitute) shows in its latest report that around 14% of the projects are failing, 43% of them are going over budget (Alarming! almost half), and 50% are not being completed on the expected date.

So, what do all these statistics have as a common factor? All of them can be mitigated or reduced by correct project progress tracking.

However, project progress tracking is not always easy.

  • First, not having a clear project plan: A project plan is a foundation for tracking progress. Knowing what milestones to reach can be challenging without a clear project plan. You cant set up your project progress report correctly if you dont have a plan. So, you need to have planned in a detailed matter before getting into the progress track

—Benjamin Franklin-.

  • Second, not setting up project tracking software or tools properly: If you’re not using project management software, you can use excel or any other tools. • Actionable: The data that you curate should be clear enough that you can write suggestions or mitigating actions along with the report.

4. Review & Reflect Regularly

Finally, make it a habit to review and reflect on project progress regularly.

Moreover, doing so will help to identify any issues early on and allow you to take corrective actions accordingly.

Trust yourself

As a project manager, it’s crucial that you trust yourself to keep track of projects and ensure their successful completion.

While you may have team members responsible for specific tasks, ultimately, it’s up to you to ensure that everything comes together on time and within budget.

To be able to do things on budget and time means being organized and efficient in your work and keeping a close eye on your team’s work.

It can be tempting to micromanage every aspect of a project, but this can lead to problems. Instead, focus on being professional and efficient in your work, and trust that your team will do the same.
